BEYOND THE LIGHTS
Beyond the Lights is a modern day Body Guard. If you’re too young to remember the movie Body Guard, it is the 1992 movie starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. In the film, music star Rachel played by Whitney Houston falls in love with her bodyguard Frank (Kevin Costner). Fast forward to 2014 and Beyond the Lights puts a modern fresh twist to the love story classic.
Beyond the Lights follows the life of Noni, (Gugu Mabatha-Raw) a beautiful young, R&B singer who is being suffocated in the music industry where she isn’t free to be herself. One night the pressure of the industry becomes too overwhelming for her to handle so she attempts suicide as an escape. During her suicide attempt she is rescued by a young, handsome police officer named Kaz (Nate Parker) who shortly after the incident becomes her bodyguard.
The two quickly fall in love despite them having totally different lifestyles. Kaz becomes the backbone that Noni needs to help her maintain peace in the brutal and unforgiving entertainment business. The movie concludes with Noni becoming content with who she is as a person and finding her voice in the music industry.
Overall Beyond the Lights is an average movie. It isn’t great or horrible, but simply a cute love story with a powerful message of finding happiness within.
