If you are still torn on what to believe about the recent sexual abuse allegations that have been brought against Bill Cosby, then the most recent allegation by Beverly Johnson might sway your opinion. For those of you who might be unfamiliar with her name, Beverly Johnson was a top model in the 70’s and 80’s, and she was the first African American woman to grace the cover of Vogue in 1974.

She recalled her encounter with Bill Cosby in an article in Vanity Fair. Like many of the other women who came forward with their stories, she described Cosby as a man she admired and respected. He was looked upon as a great “All American” guy that was funny, intelligent, and admirable. As a black man early in his career in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, he had the same appeal to non-blacks.

According to Johnson, Cosby invited her over to his home to prepare for a role that she was going to play on The Cosby Show. She said he offered her a cup of cappuccino and after taking a few sips, she immediately knew she had been drugged. When she realized what was happening, she made it clear to Cosby she was well aware of what he was trying to do. She said he reacted angrily, and he put her out of his house without saying a word.

Johnson stated she didn’t come forward at that time because she felt it would do more harm than good trying to fight a battle with a well-respected and powerful man. And even now she was still skeptical about speaking out because of all the negativity surrounding black men; she didn’t want to be a part of bringing down another black man especially one who has been cherished for years. She said with all of the women coming forward (some close friends), she couldn’t sit in silence. She had to speak up for all of the women who have ever suffered from sexual abuse but were too afraid to speak up out of fear.

Well they say the truth has a way of following you and apparently it took over 30 years but the truth is catching up with Mr. Huxtable.
