If you have been keeping up with the world of hip hop, then you’ve probably heard the term cultural appropriation being used a lot lately in regards to white hip hop artists. If you’re unaware of what cultural appropriation means, let me define it for you quickly.

Cultural appropriation: A term used to describe the taking over of creative or artistic forms, themes, or practices by one cultural group from another.

Hip Hop artist Azealia Banks (probably better known for her public twitter beefs with other artists rather than her music) has been coming hard at rapper Iggy Azalea lately. She did a recent interview with Hot 97 where she opened up about the real issue she had with Iggy. The 23 year old didn’t hold back as she gave her raw and candid opinion about the state of hip hop music, her dislike for rapper T.I., cultural appropriation, slavery and other topics. She even became emotional and broke down a few times. The interview showed a different side of the artist who is normally portrayed as an internet bully. She actually made some valid points and spoke passionately about her beliefs and feelings.

She expressed during the interview:

“They’re trying to erase us. Like all of our books and scriptures and everything we’re supposed to know about ourselves is gone….. Like completely f*cking gone and never to be seen again.”

Azealia isn’t the only artist that has spoken out about the…… DARE I SAY…….. “white-washing” of hip hop music. Rapper J-Cole touched on the topic in his single “Fire Squad” and rap veteran Q-Tip schooled Iggy in 40 tweets on the history of hip hop.
