One word to describe the music group Nepotism is unique. I met Rob, one of the members of the group last month at a holiday mixer and we exchanged contact information so I could interview him to learn more about Nepotism and their music.
Initially based on appearance I assumed that Rob was a part of a rap group but after listening to the group’s LP “Black Sheep” I was so wrong. The LP consists primarily of rock music. I asked Rob about the title of the LP and he said the following:
“Black Sheep as a title represents the hardship as a new band viewed as an outsider from the rest of an already developed scene that views us as an outcast.”
I’m not a huge rock fan but I do enjoy some alternative music. My favorite song off of the LP was Animals. As soon as I heard the song it instantly put me in the mindset of The Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s song Californication. When asked about the meaning behind the song Rob said the following:
“Animals is an anthemic song, it speaks to the voice inside that we let others cage. We are all strong beings yet allow others to control us and cage us.”
Another song off the LP that caught my attention was New American Drug. The sound definitely gives off a Nirvana type vibe. Rob described the song’s meaning as:
“A song about pop culture and how it dictates us like a drug. It is the most popular drug in the world because it tells us what to think, when to think and who to be. It is a vice.”
The group Nepotism consists of five guys; Rob, D, Luke, Justin and Moses. They are all in their 20’s and are from various states including South Carolina, Maryland, and New Jersey.

Get to know a little bit more about the group from my interview below:
Describe the type of music you make?
“We honestly would like to describe the music we make as being a real grade…..honestly fun music, we don’t really label our music anything because it has so many layers to it. Like trying to put a label on what we do, would confuse a mass majority. We have a hub that links us forever to rock music but we are a bit more than that.”
Explain the name of the group?
“We chose the name Nepotism back in 2012; we had a few name ideas to pick from but Nepotism seemed the most obscure and interesting. There really isn’t much of a story to the name really but we can say it has grown to have so many different meanings to us than what the dictionary deems it as.”
What music artists influence you?
“I usually try not to let so much of the artist influence me but what the music is saying, the artist is a visual aide. I tend to appreciate people like Prince, Corey Taylor of Stone Sour and Slipknot, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, Kurt Cobain, and many other for their musicality and songwriting.”
What do you think sets you guys apart from other artists?
“We are just honest guys who go out there and give it our all, to say we are different from the next is something someone else would have to determine because we just want to go and tell our truth and do things however we see fit to do them. If that makes us different from the rest then I guess that is it, but I rather someone else make that stand for us.”
Are you working on any projects?
“We are working on our upcoming 2015 release at the moment; we don’t have a date stamp on when it will be released just yet but we have a few songs already in post-production and it’s going to show a lot of growth from us. I’m really stoked to have the world listen to it soon!”
I thought the name Nepotism was very interesting so I looked up the meaning and the word means the practice among those with power or influence. Influential is a great adjective to describe this group as I’m sure they will leave a lasting impression with their music.
