Receiving a grand total of nine nominations, The Grand Budapest Hotel has come in hot this 87th Oscars awards season. With nominations including Best Picture, Cinematography, Costume Design, Directing, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Production Design, and Writing (Original Screenplay), the film is projected to win at least one award this season, right?
Well, if I’m being honest, I think that’s exactly what will happen.
Though there are many strong contenders, such as submissions like The Theory of Everything, Birdman and Boyhood, I’d like to take a bet and say that Grand Budapest is in for a couple of wins this year.
First on my ticket: Costume Design, which let’s face it also kind of goes hand-in-hand with Makeup and Hairstyling for this particular film, but we’ll get to that in just a minute. If you’ve seen the movie, then you know what I’m talking about with costume design- the lavish colors of the costumes, and the details that went into them, which helped set the film in a specific time frame in history.
I also say secondly that Grand Budapest may win Makeup and Hairstyling for a few creations throughout the film, like Saoirse Ronan’s milkmaid braid wrapped around her head, or her huge FAKE birthmark that stretches halfway across her face. Oh, and let’s not forget hair & makeup had to make Tilda Swinton look like a ninety year old woman, who is actually 54 years old.
So in all, I think Grand Budapest has some pull to win in both Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling Academy Award categories to say the least. Now whether or not the film will actually receive these awards is up to the Academy, so we will just have to tune in to ABC on February 22nd to find out, but don’t be shocked if The Grand Budapest Hotel takes home more than one award for the win.
